Yet if you watch it in Philadelphia, there\u2019s a chapter you can\u2019t ignore. In fact, it\u2019s the moment Michael and his brothers slide into the \u201cSound of Philadelphia<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Motown to Broad Street<\/h3>\n

In 1976, the Jackson 5<\/strong> left Motown<\/a><\/strong>, dropped the \u201c5,\u201d and reemerged as The Jacksons<\/strong> on Epic Records<\/strong>. At the same time, that shift quietly opened the door to Philly. Tucked into the new deal was a detail that matters here. Their first two Epic albums,\u00a0The Jacksons<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Goin\u2019 Places<\/strong><\/em>, were produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff<\/strong>. Consequently, they were cut in the same creative orbit as the O\u2019Jays<\/strong>, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes<\/strong>, and Billy Paul<\/strong>. These records also carried the Philadelphia International logo alongside Epic\u2019s imprint. Therefore, the Jacksons became unlikely ambassadors of Philly soul to a global pop audience.<\/p>\n

Gamble & Huff Reintroduce The Jacksons<\/h3>\n

Gamble and Huff did more than give the group a new sound. Instead, they helped reintroduce them as young men instead of kid stars. \u201cEnjoy Yourself,\u201d the first breakout single of the era, pairs a funky guitar lick and punchy horns with a relaxed, confident Michael. In addition, \u201cShow You the Way to Go\u201d smooths things even further. It wraps his vocal in strings and slows the tempo just enough to feel grown without losing warmth.<\/p>\n

Deep Cuts in a Philly Groove<\/h3>\n

The deeper cuts also show how fully the Jacksons stepped into this world. For example, \u201cLiving Together\u201d leans on lush arrangements and a message of unity that fits any classic PIR side. On\u00a0Goin\u2019 Places<\/em>, the title track then rides a rolling groove that mirrors the group\u2019s real\u2011life transition. Meanwhile, \u201cStrength of One Man\u201d taps into the label\u2019s tradition of big, emotional ballads. Here, Michael and his brothers stretch into a more mature, soulful space.<\/p>\n
