At an intimate \u201clunch and learn\u201d hosted by Darlene of <em><\/em><em>The Nightly Spirit<\/em>, Kirk Franklin sat down before a live audience for a conversation filled with laughter, honesty, and plenty of faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three Decades of Ministry Through Music<\/h3>\n<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franklin\u2019s first album was released in July 1993, and his journey in gospel music now spans more than 30 years. His story started even earlier. Darlene remembered seeing a teenage Kirk hustling at the Gospel Music Workshop of America while the legendary James Cleveland was still alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those early lessons laid the foundation for a career that has reached churches, homes, and car stereos across generations.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Peace With Who He Is<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Success has also brought scrutiny. Franklin said critics have questioned his motives, sincerity, and style throughout his career. Some claimed he was \u201cnot church enough\u201d or \u201cnot godly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 56, he no longer works to win over his critics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever you think of me, whatever your view is, good, bad, or ugly, I am what I am,\u201d Franklin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also credited his spiritual mentor, Pastor Tony Evans, with a lesson that changed him at 28: \u201cIt\u2019s hard to know God\u2019s love as a father when you never had one.\u201d That truth helped him understand grace in a deeper, more personal way.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TRENDING STORY: <a href=\"https:\/\/blackamericaweb.com\/2026\/09\/03\/bishop-hezekiah-walker-cancer-free-the-favor-that-carried-him\/\">Bishop Hezekiah Walker: 2 Years Cancer-Free &amp; the Favor That Carried Him<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TRENDING STORY: <a href=\"https:\/\/blackamericaweb.com\/2026\/02\/11\/donnie-mcclurkins-better-afterwhile-reaches-1\/\">Donnie McClurkin\u2019s \u201cBetter Afterwhile\u201d Reaches #1<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rooted in Black Gospel<\/h3>\n<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franklin was clear about his commitment to the sound that shaped him. While many churches move toward other styles of worship, he remains devoted to traditional Black gospel, complete with choirs and Hammond organs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody has the beauty and the magic and the color of creativity like people of color,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are one of one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calls his style \u201cNegro gospel.\u201d \u201cI got a little gravy on my God,\u201d he explained, \u201cbecause our struggles and our life experiences are different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His message never changes. \u201cWhen you listen to my music, no matter how ratchet the track is, I say Jesus,\u201d Franklin said. \u201cYou always know who I\u2019m talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New Album: <em>I Am What I Am<\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His latest project, <em>I Am What I Am<\/em>, is the first double album of his career. It features 14 tracks split into two sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven songs were recorded live in church with a choir, a band, and a live audience. These tracks bring back the classic sound of his early years. The other seven are studio songs that showcase what he calls \u201cthe other Kirk,\u201d while staying centered on Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franklin left the audience with a reminder many believers need to hear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not perfect, and life is not perfect, and that is okay,\u201d he said. \u201cGod does not love me any less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 30 years, Kirk Franklin is still lifting the name of Jesus. He is still celebrating the culture that raised him.
