Earlier this year, I decided to rewatch “A Different World” because I have this thing where I watch my comfort shows at different stages of life because I think my perspectives change over time. The cultural significance of the show is immense so I was a little worried about the spinoff. Lucky for us, the reboot is exactly what we need at this point and time.

The New Class

The freshman class of Netflix’s A Different World sequel features a diverse group of next-generation characters bridging the gap between the original legacy and contemporary college life. Key additions include Deborah Wayne, daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, and Shaquille Johnson, son of Ron Johnson, alongside returning and expanding legacy dynamics.

I really appreciate the multi-dimensionality of the new characters especially Amir. As the first openly gay character on the show, I really appreciated his authenticity. Not to mention, he had us cracking up with one liners like “Beige Rage Alert” and “Cut his mic!”

The reboot does a beautiful job of depicting the beauty and struggles of college life, going to an HBCU, being a legacy, growing up in 2026, being young, gifted and Black — all the things.
