Now the gospel icon is preparing to step away from the studio. In a candid conversation with Darlene McCoy on The Nightly Spirit, McClurkin confirmed that his new project, Finally, will close the recording chapter of his career.

“I am so absolutely hanging this coat up and moving on,” he said. When McCoy asked what moving on looks like, he answered plainly: “I don’t know yet.”

A Song Recorded Before the Storm

The project’s single, “Lord, I Thank You,” carries a weight McClurkin never planned. In August 2025, about a week after recording wrapped, he suffered congestive heart failure at a hotel in Nashville following the Stellar Awards.

Around 4 a.m., he collapsed on the hotel lobby floor. He flatlined. First responders struggled to restore his heartbeat and broke his ribs during chest compressions. He was then intubated and remained in a coma for four days.

“The whole entirety of the project that was recorded a week before took on a brand new meaning,” McClurkin said. The song, he added, “became more real to me than ever before.”

He recalled an emotional moment from the session itself. While singing the line “for my family, Lord, I thank you,” he looked at his sister Andrea, who was singing background vocals, and broke down in tears mid-recording.

McClurkin said he kept the song simple on purpose so “any and everybody can sing” it. His hope is that it brings listeners back to “that simplistic ability to say, thank you.”

McCoy connected the message to her audience, noting that many listeners are facing the most challenging seasons of their lives. Gratitude, she said, matters most in the dark days.

TRENDING STORY: <a
