After years of overcoming blindness in one eye, family violence and personal struggles, Bronx-born R & B artist\u00a0Bright Day<\/strong>\u00a0is releasing his new single, \u201cBrand New,\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0His\u00a0talent has already attracted\u00a0the backing of\u00a0DJ DonDada<\/strong>\u00a0formerly of VH1\u2019s Black Ink Crew and the attention of a major veteran entertainment publicist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBrand New,<\/a>\u00a0a feel-good banger, came from an ordinary moment.\u00a0One night, Bright Day had a melody running through his head when he noticed a nearby box containing a pair of new shoes. The feeling associated with something fresh, clean and flawless sparked an idea. What if he could use that same feeling to describe a woman?<\/p>\n

That thought developed into \u201cBrand New,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a smooth, flirtatious and confident record celebrating a woman who captures attention from head to toe. Beyond physical attraction, the song is about admiration and making someone feel as good as she looks.<\/p>\n

The single is his latest triumph in a journey that has not been easy<\/p>\n

He learned early that life was tough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Born\u00a0Eric Bright<\/strong>, he grew up legally blind in one eye. But rather than allowing his disability to define what he could do, he kept it largely to himself, including while playing basketball.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlind in one eye was my little secret,\u201d Bright Day says. \u201cI never wanted to make excuses. Just played on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The secret was only one part of a childhood marked by far more than a physical limitation.<\/p>\n

At home, Bright Day says, his father was a functioning alcoholic whose drinking was accompanied by anger and violence. As the middle child, and the sibling who felt different from the others, Bright Day describes himself as more active, more rebellious and caught somewhere between the streets and the life he knew he wanted.<\/p>\n

He says he became the target of his father\u2019s drunken beatings.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe being the middle child and much different than the other siblings, more active, halfway in the streets, halfway out, always in trouble, I got the brunt of the drunken beatings,\u201d he recalls. \u201cSome senseless, some made sense. Either way, for me it was hell on Earth living in the same home with my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fighting didn\u2019t stop at the front door.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfathomable, constant anger, always fighting,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether inside the house or outside the house, whether outside on the streets or inside my mind, constant war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somewhere inside that constant war, however, there was music.<\/p>\n

At 10 years old, Bright Day discovered the power a song could have over a room. He began writing songs before he fully understood that he could sing them. By 18, he had management and had already decided that music was not simply a childhood fantasy.<\/p>\n

The dream survived everything else.<\/p>\n

And that may be the most important thing to understand about Bright Day.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t emerge from his childhood with a neatly packaged inspirational story. He came out of it carrying scars, contradictions and questions about where he belonged. Basketball, music and the streets all became part of his journey as he tried to figure out who he was and what he could become.<\/p>\n

Music eventually gave him a place to put all of it.<\/p>\n

His influences range from\u00a0Michael Jackson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bobby Brown<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Stevie Wonder, George Michael<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Phil Collins<\/strong>. But Bright Day isn\u2019t trying to recreate the past. He is building contemporary R&B around melody, romance and the emotional experiences that shaped him.<\/p>\n

His stage name, a play on his given name, Eric Bright, is itself a statement about what he believes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe dark nights are part of what make a bright day mean something,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Now that belief is being tested in a very different arena: the music business.<\/p>\n

Bright Day has attracted the attention of veteran entertainment publicist\u00a0Lynn Hobson<\/strong>\u00a0of Hobson PR, whose career has included publicity work for major names including\u00a0Dipset, Mike Tyson, Gucci Mane, Rasheeda\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sister Souljah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For an independent artist still introducing himself to a national audience, having someone with Hobson\u2019s industry r\u00e9sum\u00e9 recognize his potential is significant.<\/p>\n

But Hobson says what drew her to Bright Day wasn\u2019t simply a song.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>Bright Day represents the type of artist whose story is just as important as the music,\u201d Hobson says. \u201cHe has experienced life, he has faced challenges and he is still choosing to pursue something that has been in his heart since he was a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

That persistence is precisely what separates Bright Day\u2019s story from another independent artist hoping for a breakthrough.<\/p>\n

There is no overnight success story here.<\/p>\n

There is a man who spent years navigating blindness in one eye without wanting special treatment. A child who grew up in a home filled with alcohol, anger and violence. A young man who struggled to find his place. And an artist who kept returning to the same dream even when life gave him plenty of reasons to walk away from it.<\/p>\n

Now, at a stage in his life when giving up might have been easier, Bright Day is moving forward.<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s doing it with a song that sounds nothing like the darkness he describes.<\/p>\n

The man singing about love and attraction is someone who grew up surrounded by conflict. The artist celebrating something new spent years trying to get beyond what happened in his past.<\/p>\n

That tension is part of what makes Bright Day\u2019s story worth watching.<\/p>\n

He is also building beyond the new single.<\/p>\n

A self-published author, Bright Day wrote\u00a0Eyes Wide Open<\/em>, a romance with a superhero-inspired concept. He is developing a documentary connected to his music, with ambitions to eventually expand into short-form narrative film. A follow-up single,\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Love Will Reign,\u201d is also on the way.<\/p>\n

And then there are the dreams.<\/p>\n

Bright Day would love to collaborate with\u00a0Mariah Carey<\/strong>, work with producer\u00a0Mark Ronson<\/strong>\u00a0and, one day, perform at Yankee Stadium.<\/p>\n

For someone who has spent much of his life fighting battles most people never saw, those ambitions aren\u2019t simply about fame.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re about refusing to let circumstances write the final chapter.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrand New\u201d<\/a>\u00a0may be the song introducing Bright Day to a wider audience. But the bigger story is the man who refused to stop believing that our own bright days are always possible.<\/p>\n
