It\u2019s a portrait of a hip-hop veteran using his platform to heal, teach, and show up for the people who need him most. It was about service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been in the community, but with boots on the ground,\u201d Dro said. \u201cIt still takes the village.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days, the rapper born D\u2019Juan Hart is mentoring students across four Clayton County schools:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eddie White Academy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Riverdale Middle School<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Riverdale High School<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lovejoy High School<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His focus? Teaching behavioral and mental health\u2014and helping young people understand that taking care of their minds is just as important as taking care of their bodies. This isn\u2019t a brand-new lane for Dro, either. Back in 2023, he launched a \u201cguns down initiative,\u201d touring Georgia schools to talk about nonviolence and steer Black youth away from the cycles that claim too many young lives. The mentorship work he\u2019s doing now is the natural next chapter of that mission.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cMental Health Is Just Like Physical Health\u201d<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most powerful part of the conversation came when Dro spoke openly about mental health in the Black community\u2014a subject still wrapped in silence and stigma for far too many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrowing up in the Black community, if you had mental health problems, they just put you in the back room,\u201d he reflected. \u201cNobody talked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dro is changing that by leading with his own truth. He shared that he\u2019s lived with bipolar disorder for more than 30 years, takes lithium to manage it, and is thriving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMental health is just like physical health. Everybody has it,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen you fall down and hurt your knee, you go to the doctor. So why don\u2019t we take care of this here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His message to Black men especially: there\u2019s nothing to be embarrassed about. By naming his own experience out loud, Dro joins a growing chorus of Black men using their voices to normalize the conversation\u2014and he\u2019s doing it in classrooms where it can reach kids early.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faith, Family, and Serving God<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Young Dro, the mission is rooted in faith. He described himself as a religious person who serves God, and connected that belief directly to his work on mental wellness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf your mind ain\u2019t together, how can you take care of your household?\u201d he asked. \u201cYou got kids that want food, you gotta take care of your wife, your mama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Rickey Smiley noted that he hasn\u2019t heard Dro\u2019s name ringing through the streets lately, Dro had a simple response: \u201cI\u2019m doing my Father\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going Viral and Connecting With Students<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the twist that makes the mentorship work even sweeter\u2014by the time Dro arrived in those Clayton County classrooms, he\u2019d already gone viral on TikTok. The students knew exactly who he was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he gave them a show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey thought they were so cool,\u201d he laughed, describing how performing for the kids helped him connect. That bridge matters. When students see a celebrity pouring real time and energy into them, the lesson lands differently. It tells them: <em>if he can make it through and come back to help, so can I.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting T.I. on <em>Kill the King<\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dro\u2019s appearance at the BET Awards wasn\u2019t only about the youth work. He\u2019s also out supporting his brother T.I., who just released his twelfth and final studio album, <em>Kill the King<\/em>, on June 26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m on, like, two songs on there,\u201d Dro said. \u201cI\u2019m out here supporting my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collaboration is no surprise. Dro signed to T.I.\u2019s Grand Hustle label back in 2004, and his debut album <em>Best Thang Smokin\u2019<\/em> (2006) shot to No. 3 on the <em>Billboard<\/em> 200 behind the top-ten hit \u201cShoulder Lean.\u201d Nearly two decades later, the two are still locked in.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Music on Deck: P$C, Metro Boomin, and More<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dro isn\u2019t slowing down on the music front. He laid out a packed release schedule:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The P$C album<\/strong>, featuring Dro alongside Big Country Kane and Matt Boney, drops after T.I.\u2019s project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A full collaborative album with Metro Boomin<\/strong> is on the way right after the P$C release.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For longtime fans, the P$C reunion is a full-circle moment\u2014the Grand Hustle collective helped define Atlanta\u2019s sound in the 2000s, and bringing it back signals Dro still has plenty in the tank.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Booth to the Big Screen<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Music isn\u2019t the only project keeping Dro busy. He revealed that he\u2019s appearing in two upcoming T.I. films:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>I Thought She Was the One<\/strong><\/em> (also starring Jessie Woo, among others)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Apartments<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dro kept it humble about the details\u2014\u201dTip can tell you more, I\u2019m just in them\u201d\u2014but the moves show how far his lane has expanded beyond the mic.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">30 Years of Brotherhood and 5 Years of Sober<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The friendship between Young Dro and T.I. runs deep. Three decades deep, in fact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been friends 30 years, since we was young,\u201d Dro said. \u201cUsually people don\u2019t keep the people around. But we still around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year carries even more weight. Dro is celebrating 20 years of <em>Best Thang Smokin\u2019<\/em> and\u2014most importantly\u2014<strong>five years of sobriety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially in this business,\u201d he noted, acknowledging how rare and hard-won that milestone is.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Daughter Who Changed Everything<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation\u2019s most moving moment came when Dro talked about family. He has three children: an oldest daughter, a second daughter who just graduated high school, and a 10-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was his oldest daughter\u2019s struggle that pushed him toward recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s what kicked me off to actually go to rehab. She had picked up using,\u201d Dro shared. \u201cSo I went and got the help and I changed. I thought that would be the beginning of helping her change\u2014seeing me change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the kind of honesty that turns a celebrity interview into something real. Dro didn\u2019t just get sober for himself; he did it to model the change he hoped his daughter could find.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Heart to Adopt<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dro isn\u2019t finished growing his family, either. He told the hosts he wants one more child\u2014and then he wants to adopt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel like there\u2019s a child out there that needs to be wrapped around, hugged up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how he\u2019s giving back to youth across Clayton County, the desire to adopt fits right into the picture.
