MIAMI BEACH, Fla. \u2014 From\u00a0Regina King<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0T.I<\/strong>., the stars came out for the American Black Film Festival\u2019s (ABFF) 30th anniversary. But the real story was the enduring mission that transformed a small gathering for Black filmmakers into one of the entertainment industry\u2019s most influential cultural events.<\/p>\n

For three decades, the ABFF festival has served as more than a gathering place for filmmakers, a launchpad for careers, a celebration of Black creativity, and perhaps most importantly, a place where Black stories are not treated as niche, but as essential.<\/p>\n

This year, as the festival celebrated under the theme \u201cThe Homecoming,\u201d ABFF transformed Miami Beach into the epicenter of Black film, television, sports, comedy, music, and culture. From star-studded red carpets and world premieres to intimate conversations with industry icons, the festival delivered a powerful reminder of why representation matters and why community \u00a0remains at the heart of storytelling. Radio\/TV personality\u00a0Jazmyn Summers<\/strong>\u00a0was there for Radio One to bring you the tea.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talk about safe spaces a lot now,\u201d ABFF co-founder and CEO\u00a0Jeff Friday\u00a0<\/strong>reflected. \u201cThere was really no safe space for Black artists to go to build their first audiences, to get encouragement from their community, from studios, from fellow artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

What started as a solution to that problem has become something much larger.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really less about film and TV and more about just Black joy and Black empowerment and Black success and Black legacy,\u201d Friday said. \u201cAnd this is more about the emerging creators than it is. We have a long legacy of helping people get their start in this business and that\u2019s really the most rewarding part of the 30th anniversary.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Thrilling Start With\u00a0Strung<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The celebration began with the opening-night premiere of Peacock and Blumhouse\u2019s psychological thriller\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Strung,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0directed by acclaimed filmmaker\u00a0Malcolm D. Lee.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The film follows a gifted violinist at the center of a suspense-filled narrative that blends music, mystery, and psychological tension. Directed by Lee, whose filmography includes beloved classics such as\u00a0The Best Man<\/em>\u00a0franchise and\u00a0Girls Trip<\/em>, the project marks a notable creative shift.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a departure,\u201d Lee admitted to Summers. \u201cBut it\u2019s all in the wheelhouse of being a storyteller. I really enjoy storytelling and I wanted to try my hand at different genres all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

What attracted him to the project was simple.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the script came across my desk, I loved what I read and I kept turning the pages and just couldn\u2019t put it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

For audiences wondering whether \u201cStrung<\/em>\u201d is worth adding to their watchlists, Lee\u2019s answer was immediate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d be totally engaged,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that you want to do in a dark room, have some popcorn and have your friends around because you will need support while watching this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Music plays a central role in the film\u2019s storytelling.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusic is a very big part of this whole narrative,\u201d Lee explained. \u201cWe go anywhere everywhere from classical music to hip hop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast brought equal excitement to the project.<\/p>\n

Veteran actress\u00a0Lynn Whitfield<\/strong>\u00a0teased her character Audra with just enough mystery to leave audiences intrigued.<\/p>\n

\u201cAudra is the matriarch, the major puppeteer. She thinks she knows it all and she runs the household and the rest is a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coco Jones<\/strong>, meanwhile, described her character Jasmine as the emotional relief amid the tension.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played Jasmine in \u2018Strung.\u2019 She\u2019s Layla\u2019s best friend who\u2019s played by Chloe Bailey and really I\u2019m the lightheartedness in this thriller.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet even her character isn\u2019t spared from the chaos.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext thing you know, we\u2019re in this crazy scenario where we got to ride or die and Jasmine\u2019s going to be a ride or die.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening-night red carpet featured a who\u2019s who of talent including\u00a0Chloe Bailey<\/strong>, Coco Jones,\u00a0Lucien Laviscount<\/strong>, Lynn Whitfield,\u00a0Romy Woods, Donna Biscoe<\/strong>, Malcolm D. Lee, producer\u00a0Dominique Telson<\/strong>\u00a0and executive producers\u00a0Giselle Johnson-Morris<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Shaun Sutton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Festival ambassador Regina King was also on hand, helping to usher in a weekend filled with some of the biggest names in entertainment.<\/p>\n

Beyond the Red Carpet<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What continues to separate ABFF from many entertainment events is its unique ability to pair celebrity with substance.<\/p>\n

The first full day featured an intimate Legacy Talk with Regina King that explored her journey from child actress to Academy Award-winning performer and director. The conversation felt particularly meaningful given her longstanding relationship with the festival.<\/p>\n

Another highlight came from legendary basketball coach\u00a0Dawn Staley<\/strong>, who discussed leadership, legacy, and the courage required to create lasting impact.<\/p>\n

The evening concluded with the prestigious HBO Short Film Award Showcase, which has become one of the industry\u2019s most respected launching pads for emerging filmmakers.<\/p>\n

Netflix, Anime, Sports and Cultural Conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As the festival progressed, ABFF demonstrated the remarkable breadth of Black storytelling.<\/p>\n

Crunchyroll\u2019s Black Fandom of Anime panel explored the growing influence of Black anime fans and creators, \u00a0while playwright\u00a0Aleshea Harris<\/strong>\u00a0(Is God Is<\/em>)offered insight into her transition from stage to screen.<\/p>\n

One of the most emotional moments came during a screening of ESPN\u2019s\u00a0The Brittney Griner Story<\/em>. The conversation that followed, featuring\u00a0Cherelle Griner<\/strong>, Dawn Staley and director\u00a0Alexandria Stapleton<\/strong>, reflected on resilience, advocacy and perseverance.<\/p>\n

Netflix brought together a powerhouse roster for its Celebration of Black Television panel, including\u00a0Debbie Allen, Courtney Kemp, Michelle Buteau, Mario Van Peebles, Crystal Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Felicia Pride.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, actor\u00a0Taye Diggs<\/strong>\u00a0sat down for a candid conversation about career longevity, wellness and financial literacy, offering practical insights drawn from decades in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u201cLegacy to me is people being able to recall the work that we\u2019ve done and be affected by it,\u201d Diggs shared. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more gratifying than having someone say, \u2018I saw this movie, this TV show, this musical, this play, and it really inspired me to do something.\u2019 Even just being inspirational, that to me is a legacy\u2014inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in a rare treat, legendary Tisha Cambell had the crowd laughing with a hilarious stand up routine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Personal Side of Stardom<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the joys of ABFF is that audiences get to see stars beyond their public personas.<\/p>\n

Coco Jones, the Grammy-winning singer and actress opened up to Radio One not only about\u00a0\u201cStrung<\/em>,\u201d but also about life, love and what\u2019s next musically.<\/p>\n

Jones revealed she is currently working on her second album and embracing a more romantic and self-assured artistic direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very, I love me and it overflows into my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the secret to a healthy relationship, Jones, who has publicly celebrated her relationship with NBA star\u00a0Donovan Mitchell<\/strong>, offered a refreshingly grounded answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think a secret to a good relationship in general is to be humble. I feel like pride comes before the fall and if you can\u2019t grow, if you can\u2019t correct and apologize and forgive, y\u2019all not going nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in one of the lighter moments of the festival, Jones shared her biggest pet peeve:<\/p>\n

\u201cBig egos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her \u201cStrung<\/em>\u201d co-star Chloe Bailey had her own memorable list of pet peeves, revealing that she dislikes mean people and men with long fingernails with dirt underneath them, a response that quickly became one of the more talked-about off-camera moments among festival attendees.<\/p>\n

These candid glimpses are part of what makes ABFF special. The stars arrive as celebrities but often leave feeling accessible, relatable and human.<\/p>\n

Looking Toward the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The festival\u2019s final days continued to deliver headline-making moments.<\/p>\n

The cast of \u201cAll American\u201d reunited to discuss the show\u2019s final season. Director\u00a0Tyree Dillihay<\/strong>\u00a0shared insights into the years-long journey behind the animated feature\u00a0GOAT<\/em>, produced by NBA superstar\u00a0Stephen Curry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0One of the most anticipated premieres of the weekend was\u00a0Girl Dad<\/em>, which brought Michael Rainey Jr. and Marsai Martin to the festival stage following the film\u2019s world premiere. The emotionally layered drama explores family, reconciliation, and the complicated bonds between parents and children, themes that resonated strongly with festival audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you to all the beautiful Black girls out there who inspire me every day,\u201d gushed Martin.<\/p>\n

T.I.<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Terrence J\u00a0<\/strong>drew crowds for a screening of\u00a0Thought She Was the One<\/em>, and the festival closed in signature fashion with the Legendary White Party, where T.I. surprised attendees with a live performance.<\/p>\n

Thirty Years Later<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What ABFF accomplished in Miami Beach this year extended far beyond premieres, panels and parties.<\/p>\n

At a time when conversations around representation continue to evolve, the festival remains proof of what happens when Black creators are given space, visibility and support.<\/p>\n

Over the past three decades, ABFF has helped launch careers, elevate new voices and create opportunities for filmmakers who may otherwise have struggled to find an audience.<\/p>\n

As Jeff Friday reflected on the festival\u2019s legacy, his words served as a reminder of why ABFF matters.<\/p>\n

It was never simply about movies.<\/p>\n

It was always about building a community where Black creativity could thrive.<\/p>\n

King perhaps summarized the spirit of the weekend best when she described her return to ABFF as \u201ca homecoming \u2013 a celebration of our creativity, resilience, and excellence.\u201d Thirty years after its founding, the festival continues to embody all three<\/p>\n

Thirty years later, that mission feels as relevant and powerful as ever.<\/p>\n
