Nighttime is a perfect cauldron for an artist. Stillness within the quiet pace of the evening renders alchemy, and in singer Alex Isley\u2019s <\/a>case, birthed gold within the layers of her major label debut album, \u201cWhen the City Sleeps.\u201d <\/a>Throughout 15 songs, Isley invites us to lean over the cauldron, capturing intimate snapshots about heartbreak, love, and self-realization.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019When the City Sleeps\u2019 is really just a collective of a lot of my deepest thoughts and feelings about my love life and what the future of my love life looks like,\u201d Isley told HelloBeautiful. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a lot of reflection, a lot of self-questions and things, a lot of reaffirming myself and competence. So I feel like it\u2019s a little bit of everything, but it\u2019s definitely a nocturnal vibe, a nighttime album.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laced between knowing and searching, the album\u2019s synopsis builds on the foundation of R&B, a genre Isley knows well as Ernie Isley\u2019s daughter<\/a> of the legendary Isley Brothers<\/a>. But Isley isn\u2019t invested in relying on her family history; she\u2019s in pursuit of building outside of it, splitting open to face self.<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s muse is two-fold. Inspired by Isley\u2019s hometown, Los Angeles, building on the tradition of Black musicians rendering home, like Outkast\u2019s \u201cSouthernplayalisticadillacmuzik\u201d (1994)<\/em>, Lupe Fiasco\u2019s \u201c<\/em>Food & Liquor\u201d (2006)<\/em>, Solange\u2019s \u201cWhen I Get Home\u201d (2019)<\/em>, and Kendrick Lamar\u2019s \u201cGNX\u201d (2024)<\/em>.\u00a0 Within these bodies of work, the artist asks, \u201cWhat is home? What role do systemic oppression, displacement, and identity play in loving, living, and being?<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s elements of hip hop, there\u2019s elements of West Coast hip-hop specifically, you know, I was raised on that,\u201d Isley said. \u201cThere\u2019s elements of jazz, there\u2019s elements of even folk, I think, like when it comes to the songwriting itself. \u201c<\/p>\n

Isely\u2019s second muse was the jazz standard, \u201cIn the Wee Small Hours of the Morning<\/a>,\u201d originally performed by Frank Sinatra, including versions by Johnny Mathis and Ella Fitzgerald. \u201cIn the wee small hours of the morning, while the whole wide world is fast asleep. You lie awake and think about the girl. And never, ever think of counting sheep,\u201d the opening lyrics croon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concept is, or the lyrics are, when the whole wide world is fast asleep, you lie awake and think about the boy. And so I think that birthed the whole idea. And then I remember now I had \u2018When the City Sleeps,\u2019 the song, I had that idea and just kind of sitting with that and that concept,\u201d Isley said. \u201cAnd I was like, I think that needs to be that album. I think that\u2019s what the whole collective is, \u2018When the City Sleeps.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Visibility can be overwhelming, even if you sought to share a slice of your life. Finding ways to ground herself through prayer, time with loved ones, exercising, and sunbathing is a priority, Isley told HelloBeautiful. When asked what her favorite thing to do when the city literally sleeps, Isley said she\u2019s locked into reruns of \u201cSex and the City\u201d and a Lego hobby (she\u2019s currently building a \u201cStranger Things\u201d themed Lego house).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a release. It\u2019s exhaling for me. I remember putting out this particular album and like listening to the final masters of it. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m really about to do this.\u2019 And this is again, it\u2019s just new territory for me,\u201d Isley said. \u201cAnd I feel like I\u2019m speaking a little more in detail about me and my questions and hangups and, just really vulnerable thoughts about my love life specifically and reflection and acceptance and all those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

The album\u2019s foundation began four years ago, Isley told HelloBeautiful. Within that space, the world was emerging, tethered to a pandemic that completely reformed how we commune, work, love, and digest art. Isley delved into experimentation and collaboration, releasing two EPs: \u201cMarigold\u201d (2022)<\/em>, formed out of a connection with Grammy-nominated producer Jack Dine, and \u201cI Left My Heart in Ladera\u201d (2023)<\/em>, with fellow Angeleno and Grammy Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin.<\/p>\n

Isley kept the collaborative solidarity on \u201cWhen The City Sleeps,\u201d which features an all-star roster of appearances from Syd (\u201cPCH\u201d), James Fauntleroy (\u201cWhen The City Sleeps\u201d), and Kaytranada (\u201cMic On\u201d). The album\u2019s guest spots play like an \u201cAvengers-level\u201d link up of The Internet\u2019s groundbreaking 2015 album \u201cEgo Death,\u201d where all three above mentioned artists make an appearance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJames is one that, I mean, he was kind of a bucket list collaborator for me. He\u2019s been one of my favorite writers since I was in college ages and ages ago. And I\u2019m glad to have had, you know, L.A. natives on the project because this album is so L.A. based,\u201d said Isley.<\/p>\n

\u201cSyd is an interesting one because I didn\u2019t really know her before creating \u2018PCH,\u2019 but come to find out that we have a lot of family and friends in common, and she grew up not too far from where my mom grew up. And then for Kaytranada, that was the power of Instagram DMs, just going back and forth, like, \u2018Can we please do something soon?\u2019 And so we finally got together and figured it out. And that was \u2018Mic On.\u2019 So it was a lot of fun,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

When asked whether West Coast musicians have seen more airplay in the last few years as major artists like Kendrick Lamar have held the spotlight, Isley agrees there\u2019s been greater visibility for West Coast artists.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think Kendrick absolutely has a huge part to do with it. The whole TDE, honestly. And there\u2019s such great artistry out of the West Coast. I\u2019m trying to think of all the people I could think of, like, oh gosh, I mean, you know, of course Ty Dolla $ign and Jhen\u00e9 Aiko and YG, Kenyon Dixon, and Iman Omari. Of course, the Ferris family, there\u2019s Sir and D Smoke and Davion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen The City Sleeps\u201d is colored by a hue of royal blue, or as Isley refers to it, \u201cDodger Blue.\u201d It\u2019s a thematic element present throughout the visuals and will be reflected in the waves of fans wearing blue as she begins the first leg of her \u201cWhen The City Sleeps Tour\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI want them to leave having experienced love and release and maybe some insight about themselves and their own heart and their own journey and love and life wherever they are,\u201d Isley told HelloBeautiful. \u201cI hope that they feel loved and feel the love from me.
